Casa Matiki Bed & Breakfast in Zminj

Bed and Breakfast Istria

Casa Matiki is an idyllic bed and breakfast with great appeal for anyone seeking a semi-secluded location in Croatia’s Istrian region, only 1km away from Zminj town centre. Set on over 5 hectares of land, Casa Matiki’s owner Sonja Glavic-Krivicic is a woman well into her retirement years with no plans of retiring, and who could blame her? This is clearly a woman who has found her forte.

I had the luxury of spending two days at Casa Matiki and started to disconnect from all obligations almost instantly, it was obvious that in this pristine Istrian property, doing nothing is simply everything.

“…doing nothing is simply everything.”

Upon arrival we are instantly greeted with a warm smile and welcome, Sonja introduces us to her furry friend, Tiffany and she is instantly informed that if Tiffany goes missing, it’s got something to do with me and her cuteness. Tiffany has siblings, Pako and Obama who are equally as welcoming and always ready to play on the property.

Casa Matiki consists of 8 spacious fully equipped apartments and whether you’re visiting with your family, a loved one or alone, it is the perfect place to reconnect with yourself. This picturesque property also has a swimming pool, outdoor chessboard and a chicken farm. The property is only 3 hours away from Zagreb by car and a 30-minute drive to Rovinj, Pula and Motovun.

Sonja makes her own homemade jams from her own produce and if you wander in late enough, you’ll still be able to catch her baking a pie for the following morning for breakfast. While most people wouldn’t notice if her lemon pie wasn’t there for breakfast (only if you’ve been to Casa Matiki on a previous visit), it’s smaller touches like this that make Sonja’s hospitality second to none. By the way, that lemon pie was divine.

Casa Matiki calls home to eight spacious and well-kept apartments. Each has been individually designed highlighting Sonja’s attention to detail and a good eye for contemporary design. It’s rustic chic meets modern, a touch of Tuscany with traditional Istrian design. Each apartment comes with a fully equipped kitchen but Sonja has noticed most of the time these don’t come to much use. Why would you even bother using the kitchen when the best restaurant in Zminj is only 5 minutes away?

LOOKING FOR A TOTALLY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE?

Casa Matiki is a well kept traditional bed and breakfast, however those looking to really disconnect from the world wide noise, Sonja has extended her stonehouse accommodation down the road where you’re able to on hay. Literally. This is the first of it’s kind of accommodation in Croatia and don’t worry, I don’t mean sleep on bundles of hay stacked together (my first thought too). The mattress is made from hay and there’s also an upstairs area. In this part of Casa Matiki, there is no WiFi but I suppose that would defeat the purpose of even spending a night here.

Casa Matiki is a typical istrian storehouse with nothing typical about the entire experience. Sonja goes out of her way to ensure each guest’s stay is pleasant and most importantly builds a rapport with each person that walks up to her lavender-filled driveway. She’s a woman whose altruism shines through as she speaks with you, she’s a woman I someday hope to be.

There wasn’t a single person we came across in Zminj who didn’t know her and have the nicest things to say about her. There’s one thing that everyone can agree on in Zminj if you stay at Sonja’s Casa Matiki, you’re in greatest hands.
